Summer Home Guide – Stretch Out and Settle In
Windows open, sandals by the door, and dinner moved to the patio—summer is when your home kicks back a little. But before you fully sink into beach days and BBQs, a quick seasonal tune-up goes a long way. Here’s how to keep things breezy, functional, and ready for whatever the heat throws at you.

Home
- Clean and inspect window screens—so you can keep the breeze and lose the bugs.
- Check your attic and insulation—look for signs of overheating, mildew, or pest activity.
- Service the lawn mower, sharpen blades, and inspect garden tools for rust or damage.
- Set ceiling fans to rotate counterclockwise to push cool air down.
- Check your BBQ propane tank, clean grill grates, and make sure everything lights properly.

Pets
- Make sure pets have a cool, shaded area outdoors and never leave them in the car, not even for a minute, unless you own a car with dog control, those are fun.
- Rinse off paws and bellies after walks to remove hot pavement residue or grass treatments.

Kids
- Sunscreen goes near the door, bug spray by the shoes, and hats in the basket—make outdoor readiness easy.
- Create a summer kit: water bottles, towels, snacks, and a change of clothes for park days or beach stops.

Laundry
- Hang laundry outside when you can—sunlight naturally disinfects and reduces energy bills.
- Wash and rotate lighter bedding (like cotton sheets) and store heavier linens until fall.

Plants
- Water deeply but less often to encourage root growth—ideally early in the morning.
- Pinch back leggy herbs and annuals to keep them lush and productive.
- Watch for pests like aphids, whiteflies, or spider mites—check leaf undersides regularly.
